Conducting Travel Behavior Survey among Persons with Mobility Limitations

Issue:

Major metropolitan area transportation authority sought to research persons with disabilities, anticipating the introduction of 700 mainline buses with wheelchair lifts.

Approach:

Conducted travel behavior survey among persons with mobility limitations combined a seven-day travel diary with a telephone attitudinal interview.

      Results:

      Geo-coded respondents’ trip information assessed which routes needed the new buses.

      • Subsequent follow-up study evaluated impact of lift-equipped buses on the travel behavior of persons with disabilities.
      • Client implemented our data collection recommendations, proving both cost effective and acceptable to respondents.
